LARGE BURMESE KALAGA TAPESTRY

Kalagas are traditional heavily embroidered tapestries from Myanmar in Burma. Made with padded figures sewn onto black felt back ground, the tapestry its made up of sequins, beads and fine stitching and relate to a folklore story or royal life in the old Kingdom of Burma. In this tapestry, multiple gods surround a Sacred Elephant, likely celebrating at an event. This dates back to the 70s / 80s, due to its larger size of the tapestry compared to the 40s sizes which were slightly smaller.

The outer edge of material, muslin cloth, has been mounted on a wooden frame, with hooks on the back and wire so it is ready to hang. It would be such a unique statement within a room. Upon looking close, a few of the beads on the border are missing but this can’t be seen unless you look very close.
